Cathy Chang brings thoughtful guidance, a strong musical background and an encouraging approach to private piano lessons. She teaches children, teens and adults at home in Edina and surrounding Twin Cities communities, adapting lessons to each student’s experience, interests and goals. Whether you are exploring the keyboard for the first time or developing your playing, Cathy helps you build skills and find your own musical voice.
A musical foundation, a personal approach
Shih-Han (Cathy) Chang began learning piano at age five in Taiwan. She earned her Bachelor of Arts in Music, studying bassoon and piano, at Soochow University, followed by a Master of Music in bassoon at the University of Minnesota. She is now pursuing a doctorate in piano, with completion expected in summer 2027. Her musical background also includes participation in the Mozarteum International Summer Academy in Austria and the Maine Chamber Music Seminar.
Cathy’s piano teaching experience spans private lessons and music schools, working with young children through adults. Her approach begins with the belief that every student has a musical voice worth developing. She combines technique and music theory with opportunities for expression, choosing materials that reflect the student’s interests and current abilities. Patient explanations and manageable challenges help students feel comfortable asking questions, trying again and taking pride in their progress.

Cathy introduces technique, rhythm, note reading and theory in manageable steps. Students learn how these skills connect to the music they are playing, with clear guidance and time to work through challenges.

Cathy adjusts her explanations, materials and pacing as she gets to know each student. A young beginner, a returning adult and an experienced player receive guidance suited to their goals and the support they need.

Students explore music that interests them while learning to shape phrases, listen closely and play with expression. Cathy encourages curiosity and creativity, helping each student develop a personal connection to the pieces they learn.
Clear guidance between lessons
Students leave with manageable practice goals and a clear idea of what to work on next. For younger children, Cathy involves parents by explaining the homework and sharing ways to help at home. No musical background is needed.

Cathy comes to your piano
Cathy teaches in students’ homes in Edina, Minneapolis, Bloomington, Richfield and St. Louis Park, with no added travel fee. Learning on the instrument you use for practice helps connect each lesson with the rest of the week. Available lesson times depend on your address and Cathy’s schedule.
